Cubus Armchair: A Contemporary Take on Minimalist Design

Reimagining the Classic Armchair with Eckhard Beger

The Cubus armchair, designed by Eckhard Beger, is a stunning piece of furniture that combines minimalist aesthetics with contemporary design elements. Inspired by the iconic creations of the Bauhaus period, such as the F51 by W. Gropius, this armchair features a cubic outline and a tilted appearance, adding a touch of modernity and aesthetic tension.

The Cubus armchair is part of a larger furniture collection that includes a footstool, a stool, a sofa, and a side table. It is the first piece in this interior ensemble, setting the tone for the rest of the collection.

What sets the Cubus armchair apart is its unique structure. Based on a tilted cube, a second straight cube is nested within, defining the seating position. This innovative design creates a comfortable seating experience while resting on an apparently unstable base, adding an element of surprise and intrigue.

The structure of the armchair is made from wood and can be finished with colored lacquer or covered in silver leaf, allowing for customization to suit different interior styles. The cushions, designed for maximum comfort, are available in leather or fabric, with a wide variety of color combinations to choose from.

When it comes to the construction and manufacturing of the armchair, different approaches were considered, including welded and riveted aluminum sheet metal. However, the traditional wood structure was ultimately chosen for its simplicity and cost-effectiveness. The feet of the armchair are made from steel, adding durability and stability.

Dimensions of the Cubus armchair are as follows: height - 860mm, width - 900mm, depth - 700mm, seat height - 420mm. The non-tilted basic cube has dimensions of width - 760mm, height - 680mm, and depth - 700mm. The accompanying footstool measures height - 400mm, width - 580mm, and depth - 400mm.

Eckhard Beger's Cubus armchair is a contemporary reinterpretation of the classic armchair with a footstool. While the asymmetric design raises interest and curiosity about the sitting experience, the cushions are designed to provide the same level of comfort as a traditional armchair. The footstool can also be used independently, adding versatility to the furniture ensemble.

The Cubus armchair project began in June 2020 in Geneva, Switzerland, and is set to be completed in the first quarter of 2021. Throughout the design process, extensive research was conducted to explore various color combinations, finishes, and materials. The armchair offers a wide range of options to suit different customer preferences, with color clusters tailored for both female and male audiences.

Eckhard Beger's Cubus armchair has received recognition for its outstanding design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2021. This prestigious award celebrates designs that showcase creativity, resourcefulness, and technical excellence, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

With its geometric and clear outline, the Cubus armchair is a testament to Eckhard Beger's talent and vision. Drawing inspiration from the Bauhaus style and reflecting the unpredictability of the new millennium, this design is a harmonious blend of tradition and innovation. Its minimalist yet striking appearance, combined with the use of different color combinations, makes it a captivating addition to any contemporary interior.
